Methods and Models of Loss Reserving Based on Run-Off Triangles: A Unifying Survey

چکیده
The present paper provides a unif3"ing survey of some of the most important methods and models of loss reserving which are based on run-off triangles. The starting point is the thesis that the use of runoff triangles in loss reserving can be justified only under the assumption that the development of the losses of ever3, accident year follows a development pattern which is common to all accident years. This assumption can be viewed as a primitive stochastic model of loss reserving. The notion of a development pattern rams out to be a unifying force in the comparison of methods which to a large extent can be summarized under a general version of the Bornhuetter-Ferguson method. It is shown that the loss-development method and the chain-ladder method as well as the Cape-Cod method and the additive method can be viewed as special cases of the general BornhuetterFerguson method. Some of these methods can be justified by general principles of statistical inference applied to suitable and more sophisticated stochastic models. It is shown that credibility prediction and Gauss-Markov prediction as well as maximum-likelihood estimation can contribute in a substantial way to the understanding of various methods of loss reserving.

Claims Reserving Using Tweedie’s Compound Poisson Model
We consider the problem of claims reserving and estimating run-off triangles. We generalize the gamma cell distributions model which leads to Tweedie’s compound Poisson model. Choosing a suitable parametrization, we estimate the parameters of our model within the framework of generalized linear models (see Jørgensen-de Souza [2] and Smyth-Jørgensen [8]). We show that these methods lead to reaso...
متن کاملPrediction Error of the Chain Ladder Reserving Method applied to Correlated Run-Off Triangles
In Buchwalder et al. [3] we have revisited Mack’s [7] and Murphy’s [9] estimates for the mean square error of prediction (MSEP) of the chain ladder claims reserving method. This was done using a time series model for the chain ladder method. In this paper we extend the time series model to determine an estimate for the MSEP of a portfolio of N correlated run-off triangles. This estimate differs...
متن کاملMicro-Level Loss Reserving Models with Applications in Workers Compensation Insurance
Accurate loss reserves are essential for insurers to maintain adequate capital and to efficiently price their insurance products. Loss reserving for Property & Casualty (P&C) insurance is usually based on macro-level models with aggregate data in a run-off triangle but many limitations exist in these models despite of their simplicity. A run-off triangle is a summary of underlying individual cl...

1.1. Macro and Micro Methods. For more than a century, actuaries have been using run-off triangles to project future payments, in nonlife insurance. In the 30’s, [1] formalized this technique that originated the popular chain ladder estimate. In the 90’s, [2] proved that the chain ladder estimate can be motivated by a simple stochastic model, and later on [3] provided a comprehensive overview o...
متن کاملCombining Chain-Ladder and Additive Loss Reserving Method for Dependent Lines of Business
Often in non-life insurance, claims reserves are the largest position on the liability side of the balance sheet. Therefore, the estimation of adequate claims reserves for a portfolio consisting of several run-off subportfolios is relevant for every nonlife insurance company. In the present paper we provide a framework in which we unify the multivariate Chain-ladder (CL) model and the multivari...
